Uglyville The Diary of Verona Cassidy eBook Sawney Hatton

The book was a little strange. I was not expecting it to be written the way it was. Made me question if it was an actual crime story (could be my lack of experience in reading this genre) The only thing that made me realize that it was not real readings from her diary was that there was too much of a story line. It was okay of a read, a little bit weird to be reading from the mind if a psychopath!

Uglyville The Diary of Verona Cassidy eBook Sawney Hatton Reviews

I was honored to be the first one to review a truly fantastic book. Normally, I do not gush over books, but Uglyville was one of the best indie books I've ever read! Initially, I was a little reluctant to read it, because I prefer light reads, but against all odds the author pulled me in. I was fascinated by Verona story and the narrative was spot-on. The intermittent crime evidence was a excellent add-on. I literally couldn't put the book down. Absolutely great job in every way.
Blurb

Meet Verona Cassidy. Dysfunctional. Delusional. Disturbed.

When the 15-year-old misfit sees the strikingly handsome garbageman outside her bedroom window, it's love at first sight. But love doesn't always look back the same way.

That won't stop Verona from winning his heart... at any cost. Sometimes people get used. Sometimes people get hurt. Sometimes people die.

Verona Cassidy was a very crazy person, but in an entertaining way. This book is definitely one I would not have added it to my read list, had I not seen it here on Goodreads, but most definitely am glad I read it.
I have mixed feelings about this book. It's a diary format, which means the only perspective is the lead character's. Verona is wholly unlikeable (as sociopaths tend to be when you realize what's going on in their heads), which made it difficult for me to feel anything about her. I cared more about her poor schlub classmate. HOWEVER, the author doesn't necessarily want you to like her. That's kind of the point. She's delusional and has a hole where her conscience should be. She's an unreliable narrator. Even the cover art reflects her delusions.

Which means, from a characterization standpoint, Hatton did his damn job. He somehow manages to write her diary in such a way that you never lose Verona, but you can read between the lines and piece together what's really going on. As things got crazier and her sociopathy began claiming victims, I liked her even less, but it didn't really matter; the peripheral characters evoked my sympathy sufficiently, and besides, I wanted to know where the hell it was all going. How could such a scenario end? How far would she go?

The humor is also well-paced; dry and often at Verona's expense without her realizing it.

All in all, it was a darkly humorous and well-paced book.
...or "This is not your sister's YA"

This novel fulfills all the benchmarks of a successful YA book. Vivacious ingenue. Check. Reluctant hunky love interest. Check. Rite of passage intrigue. Check. Oh, as long as you take what the narrator says with a large heap of salt. This book should come with its own salt-lick on that account. This isn't a bad thing, mind you. Verona will make you laugh and cringe in equal parts. You can tell from the beginning you are witnessing a train-wreck and in typical rubbernecking fashion you can't help but slowly turn each page to witness the inevitable. The writing is clean and the story expertly put together. Well done!
This is a quick and easy read. The decision to tell the story through diary entries makes it a page turner. And the story is really entertaining! Plus, despite being told by a fifteen year old, there are a lot of hidden complexities at play here. Hatton knows his character and he plays her well! His writing is as sincere as it is cynical, a seemingly impossible combination, but one that he somehow pulls off. I highly recommend this book for all audiences, young adult and beyond.
Uglyville reads as a build of passionate delusion, but breaks from the classical noir through relatable quirk. Bloodshed is not the central theme of the story, nor is it a necessity in the books effectiveness. The author uses the crazed intentions of a fifteen-year-old girl, a kind of foreign being our society expects drama from, as an outlet for the exploration of our wildest passions and ideas. The whim with which the "diary" is composed creates a fun dynamic, and thus a bouncing pace. Uglyville is not Hitchcock's Rebecca, nor Bridget Jones, nor Orson Welles' Lady From Shanghai - but you will feel these works as you bound through Sawney's pages.
